From 3.0 to 4.0: The Drills and Habits That Actually Move the Needle
Ask a 3.0 player what they need and they will say 'a bigger forehand.' Ask a coach and they will say consistency, depth, directional control, a trustworthy second serve, and better movement. The gap between a 3.0 and a solid 4.0 is rarely raw power โ it is the ability to do ordinary things reliably, under pressure. These seven drills target exactly that.
What actually separates a 4.0 from a 3.0
A 4.0 misses less, hits deeper, can hit the ball where they intend to, gets a spin second serve in without fear, and recovers to the middle after every shot. None of that is glamorous, and all of it is trainable. Pick one or two of the drills below per session rather than trying everything at once.
1. Cross-court consistency
Rally cross-court with a partner and count how many balls you can keep in a row โ aim for 20, then 30. Cross-court is the safest, most-used pattern in tennis (longer court, lower net in the middle), so grooving it pays off in every match.
2. Depth targets
Lay a line of cones or a rope across the court about a metre inside the baseline and try to land balls between it and the baseline. Depth is the single most under-rated weapon at the club level: a deep, boring ball pushes your opponent back and turns their attack into a defence.
3. The reliable second serve
Nothing exposes a 3.0 faster than a timid second serve. Spend 10 minutes a session hitting only second serves โ a spin serve (slice or topspin) aimed at a target box, at maybe 75% effort. The goal is not aces; it is a serve you can trust at 30โ40 without double-faulting.
4. Recover to the middle
After every shot, split-step and move back toward the centre of your court (technically the middle of your opponent's possible angles). Most 3.0 points are lost not to a great shot but to being caught out of position. Have a partner feed you side to side and make the recovery step non-negotiable.
5. Approach and volley
On a short ball, drive an approach deep, follow it in, and put away the volley. 3.0 players tend to stay glued to the baseline; learning to finish points at the net adds a whole dimension and shortens rallies you would otherwise lose.
6. Serve +1
Practise the serve and the very next ball as one unit: serve to a target, then step in and hit an aggressive forehand off the likely return. The first two shots decide most points โ training them together is far more match-realistic than hitting serves into an empty box.
7. Play actual points
Drilling builds strokes; only points build match players. Finish every session with live-ball games โ tiebreaks, or 'first to 7' โ and keep a mental note of how you lose points. If most are unforced errors (they usually are), that tells you consistency, not power, is your next project.
The off-court habits that quietly matter
- Track your unforced errors for a few matches โ the pattern will surprise you.
- Take a lesson or two; a coach fixes in minutes what you would grind at for months.
- Get your racquet strung fresh and at a sensible tension โ dead strings sabotage consistency.
- Basic footwork and fitness: you cannot hit a good ball off a bad position.
- Play people slightly better than you as often as you can.
